How to Lubricate a Garage Door

For homeowners or do it yourselfers, the instructions for how to lubricate a garage door can sometimes be unclear. This process actually can be accomplished in less than one hour if the proper supplies and equipment are gathered beforehand.

This convenient part of the home is virtually maintenance free is kept in good working order and that means making sure that all parts are lubricated properly at least twice per year.

When performing this task, a mild day is preferable, although it can also be done when the weather isn’t as nice since for the most part, everything is done inside. The equipment should be assembled and ideally any vehicle(s) moved out of the way.

The necessary list of items is compiled below:

  • 2 clean rags
  • 1 tube grease
  • 1 spray can garage door lubricant or silicone
  • 6 foot step ladder
  • Eye protection

Make sure that the ladder is on a level surface before climbing the treads. Place it near one side of the tracks, and using one of the clean rags, wipe away as much dirt and grease as possible, continuing all the way to the point where the track meets the garage floor. Do the same for the other side.

Once they are clean, spray the lubricant into the track area, again starting from the highest point and working down towards the floor. This will last a long time, so there is no need to overspray.

After both sides are done, it’s time to inspect the rollers and hinges. If they are in good shape, each of them should be lubricated with the spray as well.
The garage door may have a screw drive or a chain drive if an automatic opener has been installed.

For a screw drive, the ladder has to be positioned below on a firm level surface. Wipe away the old grease from the entire length with a clean rag, moving the ladder as necessary. The grease can then be applied using a small bead all the way along the screw.

A chain drive should also be inspected for wear and tear by positioning the ladder on a level surface and then manually checking the chain for proper tension. The old grease should be wiped off before a new layer is applied.

Once everything has been lubricated, check the operation by opening and closing the unit several times, making sure that people and objects are out of the way.
By performing this service at least twice per year, the life expectancy of the garage door will most likely be increased many times over.
