8 Reasons to Get Your Garage Door Repaired

reasons-to-fix-your-garage-doorToo often, DIY’ers and “un-handy people” will try to repair a garage door. This is an extraordinarily bad idea; some parts are truly dangerous. Here are eight reasons why you should have your garage door professionally repaired.

    1. If the repair fails and someone is hurt as a result, you could be sued or charged with a criminal offense. Guests, friends and family could be hurt if the door fails and falls on someone. The high tension spring could break and send metal shards flying or a cable whipping against someone with enough force to cause serious injuries.

    1. Your home’s insurance company may refuse to pay if the garage door causes damage to the house, a person or a vehicle. A professional company has insurance for these types of occurrences.

    1. Your garage door could fail to open at all. This would not bode well if you needed to get to a critical meeting at work or a doctor’s appointment.

    1. You could wind up causing irreparable damage to your garage door or opener. Replacing a garage door can cost up to $2,000 or more. A professional repair would cost considerably less.

    1. You could cause the door to become unbalanced. Opening and closing the door will cause undue strain on the opener, causing the motor to burn out prematurely. For doors without automatic openers, an unbalanced door will be harder to open and close. There will be a gap at the bottom of the door that will allow pests and weather to enter.

    1. Your local ordinance board may require certain repairs to be performed only by a professional. This can include adjusting the tension or torsion springs.

    1. If you sell your home, you could be liable for any damage done by an ill-repaired door. You could have to pay fines, court costs, medical bills, any repairs to vehicles, the garage door or house and punitive fees.

    1. The professional repair company will warranty the work performed. If the door still does not work properly, the technician will return and fix the problem promptly.

Maintaining the garage door is not hard and may extend its useful life. First, clean the door as needed to keep it from becoming stained. Cleaning will allow you to identify areas that need repainting or repair. Lubricate the rollers and hinges with WD-50 or other non-silicone lubricant. Be certain that nylon rollers do not come in contact with the lubricant. Do not lubricate the tracks; clean them with a clean cloth and brake cleaning fluid.
