How to Protect Your Garage Door From the Effects of Winter

garage door winter maintenanceWith such an unusually cold winter, many people have been worrying about how they can best protect their house. The cold can freeze pipes so they burst, heavy snow can collapse roofs and breaks windows and extreme winter winds can bring down powerlines. But these are not the only parts of a house that are at risk during the winter. Often overlooked, the garage is very susceptible to the effects of the winter months. This article will highlight some methods of protecting your garage, and in particular the garage door, from nature’s damage.

Heating your garage in the winter is an extremely effective way of protecting it from the cold. Your garage might already have a radiator built in. Turning on this radiator can provide heat to your garage to protect it from the cold. You can also install a heating unit in your garage, such as a space heater. A space heater is an electric heater that plugs into an outlet. Depending on the space heating you purcahse, it provides a varying amount of heat. For a relatively low price, a space heater that will heat your entire garage and help protect it from the harsh winter.

Insulating your garage is another great way to protect it from the elements. Insulating a garage means putting another layer onto the walls. The insulating layer, which can be a lot of trouble to install, is very resistant to temperature change. This means that the inside of the garage stays warm without being affected by the cold of the outside.

Make sure there are no openings

While insulation and heating can be very effective at preventing cold from entering your garage, they are completely useless if there is a bigger problem. This bigger problem can come in the form of a crack or hole in the wall or, often, in the garage door. It is very important to check for holes in the garage door and to patch them if they exist. If you do not do this, you are leaving your garage and its continents susceptible to the effects of the winter.

While each of these methods individually will be effective in keeping cold out of your garage, the best way to keep your garage protected is to use all three of these methods. If you do use all three, you can be sure that your garage and everything in it will be protected from the cold winter.
